Chapter 10

“Okay, remember, Amber is from New York. She’s here visiting for about five days, since that’s how long the potion is going to act for. She just broke up with her boyfriend. His name was Ken, and I always hated him. She’s just here to clear her head and get a bit of a break from the big city. Because Amber arrived yesterday, I didn’t actually see Storm, but I didn’t think that was weird because I was so busy. Then today I heard she disappeared. I sent her some texts and called her, but she hasn’t replied,” Ashley said.

I nodded. “Good call.”

“I actually did text and call your phone a few times earlier today too. Just to add credence to my story.”

“It’s a good thing you’re one of the good guys. I’m pretty sure if you ever wanted to actually commit a real crime, you’d totally get away with it.”

“Luckily for everybody, there isn’t much of a chance of that happening.”

“We’re much happier having you as part of the Witches Murder Club,” Montana said with a grin.

We’d decided to leave Jay at home, not only because he was sleeping away peacefully, but also because dogs weren’t allowed in the police station if they weren’t service animals, and I had a sneaking suspicion he was going to complain quite a bit if he had to go back onto his leash.

“Okay, what’s the plan?” Montana asked when we reached the front door of the building.

“I’ll start off with you guys, but then I’ll wander around a bit. Pretend to be interested in what’s going on here. I’ll end up somewhere without security cameras, go invisible, and then find the computer. How does that sound?”

“Horrifyingly unprepared,” Ashley answered. “But it’s all we’ve got right now, isn’t it? Just don’t get caught.”

“I’ll do my best,” I said with a grin as she opened the front door and we entered the station.

The interior was quite a bit busier than it normally was. Golden Hope was a small town, and most of the time, the police station reflected that. It was rare to see more than a couple of people lazing around, and half the time there wasn’t even a receptionist at the front desk. If you needed something, you just found the officer on duty and spoke to them.

Right now, however, it seemed as though every cop that worked in Golden Hope was on duty. At least fifteen officers wandered around the main part of the building, and a woman in her forties that I didn’t recognize manned the desk near the entrance.

“Yes? Can I help you?” she asked with polite curiosity when we entered.

“Hi,” Ashley said, taking over. “We’d like to report a missing person.”

“How long have they been gone for?” the woman asked.

“Since yesterday afternoon.”

“I’m sorry, but if it hasn’t been forty-eight hours—”

“It’s Storm Bancroft,” Ashley said. “I know it hasn’t been that long yet, but I know you’re looking for her. I heard Gary is dead, and I haven’t heard from her in over a day.
